A playful project for Hackers&Designers (H&D), exploring how instructions and misinterpretation spark creativity, embracing glitches to reimagine human-machine collaboration.
On Becoming Bots and Bugs is an interactive project exploring the dynamics of instruction, interpretation, and creation through a playful lens. Inspired by the game Simon Says, participants take turns acting as “coders” and “bots,” challenging their ability to give clear instructions and follow them precisely—or misinterpret them entirely, becoming “bugs.”
The process begins with a photograph, potentially of a bug, which is printed and affixed to an "INPUT" card. The coder then writes exact instructions on a "CODE" card, detailing how to recreate the image. These instructions are passed to another participant, the “bot,” who interprets them to produce a drawing on an "OUTPUT" card. The bot’s creation is then compared with the original, prompting questions about accuracy, intention, and the nature of replication. The process can be repeated iteratively to refine results or embrace glitches.
