Memory Work is a mural located at the Strachan Gate entrance to the Bentway in Toronto. The artwork consists of twelve photographic portraits of revolutionary figures from a future Toronto, belonging to a group known as the Mothers of Invention (MOI). These individuals are depicted as leaders spearheading change in their communities and represent a transformed city characterized by collective care and nurturing over growth. Each portrait is embellished with mythical landscapes and organisms, and the individuals wear distinctive aprons designed by Tala Kamea and Naomi Skwarna.
The project began with a research phase examining emerging forces of change and dreamscaping with communities. The mural invites participation and offers multiple portals of entry, including a phone number that visitors can call to hear more details about the commemorated figures and a website containing a soundscape and network of sources.
Memory Work is intended as an exploratory platform and a monument to a future Toronto, inviting engagement with the changing city and pressing us to ask who will nurture this new world. The artwork is co-presented by From Later and The Bentway with support from CONTACT, as part of ArtworxTO: Toronto's Year of Public Art 2021–2022, and additional support from the Canada Council for the Arts, City of Toronto, and the Toronto Arts Council.
