The Centre for Emerging Artists & Designers at OCAD University has created an interactive workbook and collective toolkit to help emerging artists understand intellectual property concepts and advocate for their work.
The Centre for Emerging Artists & Designers at OCAD University has created a resource to help emerging creatives understand Canadian intellectual property (IP) concepts and terms. For many emerging artists, IP can be a source of stress and overwhelm, and each situation is unique. The resource aims to help creatives unpack this discomfort and approach difficult IP conversations with care and respect.
The interactive workbook provides an introduction to the basics of IP in creative practice, as well as roleplaying exercises to learn from. The collective toolkit helps emerging artists navigate the complexities of the gray areas of IP, while considering personal contexts, interests, and values. The resource is designed to help emerging creatives understand the importance of protecting their work and advocating for its value. By providing practical tools and insights into the complexities of IP, the resource aims to help artists approach these conversations with more confidence and clarity, ultimately empowering them to protect their creative works.
Macy Siu, an artist and foresight strategist, is the creator of this resource. As a former intellectual property lawyer, she brings a specific interest in legal design and access to justice for creatives to her work. She is currently a board member of CARFAC Ontario, and part of Artengine's Digital Economies Lab.
