An interactive website reimagining Deptford Town Hall's colonial statues through 3D models, audio and stories by young people from Lewisham.
Monument MashUp is an interactive website developed in collaboration with artist Dele Adeyemo, Deptford People's Heritage Museum and Goldsmiths BA Curating, with young people from Lewisham. The site reimagines the colonial statues on Deptford Town Hall, a Grade II listed building acquired by Goldsmiths in 2000, as a series of layered, living, interactive and polyvocal relationships words, images, objects and soundscapes of local young people and their communities.
The design was built around a 3D interactive model of Deptford Town Hall, with floating monuments created by young people drifting through space. Visitors navigate the experience by clicking on these objects to access audio segments containing music, stories, spoken word and poetry that challenge colonial history and share practices of resistance. The interface gives users full control, rotating the camera view, zooming in and out, and moving between audio segments, creating an immersive and non-linear experience that de-centres the existing architecture and opens it to new perspectives.
The project grew from a five-day workshop series in August 2025 drawing on art, architecture, design and theories from the Black Radical Tradition. Young people made 3D clay objects, wrote and recorded spoken responses, and their work was brought together here alongside architectural renderings of the Town Hall.
The website forms part of the broader Deptford People's Heritage Museum and Goldsmiths project, The Monument is the Struggle, and will support a curriculum developed with the young people.
